EMPOWER LIFE is Champions World International's flagship Louisiana program โ a comprehensive support system for college students and young adults navigating housing instability. This article explains the program's structure, services, eligibility, and how to enroll.
The Housing Problem No One Was Talking About
When people talk about barriers to college completion, they typically focus on tuition, academic preparation, and financial aid. These are real barriers. But there is another one that receives far less attention โ and that, in many cases, is the deciding factor in whether a student stays enrolled or drops out.
Housing.
In Louisiana and across the South, college attendance has grown steadily over the past decade. But the supply of affordable, safe, managed off-campus housing has not kept pace. Students who are accepted to university โ who have done everything right to get there โ find themselves unable to stay because they cannot secure a stable place to live within a reasonable distance of campus.
This is not a funding problem, strictly speaking. It is a systems problem. And systems problems require systems solutions.
EMPOWER LIFE is that solution.
What EMPOWER LIFE Actually Provides
EMPOWER LIFE is not a single service. It is a coordinated package of support designed to remove every major logistical barrier between a student and their education. The package includes:
- Housing placement in managed, safe, affordable units sourced through real estate partnerships
- Peer compatibility matching with a compatible roommate before move-in
- Daily campus transportation from the housing unit to the university campus
- PPE and food supplies to ensure basic needs are met from day one
- Healthcare referrals and a network of services for medical and mental health needs
- Ongoing support coordination through a dedicated EMPOWER LIFE coordinator
Every component is included as a single package. Students do not receive partial help. The point of EMPOWER LIFE is to remove all of the logistical distractions that derail young people โ not just the most visible ones.
How the Housing Placement Works
Champions World International maintains partnerships with local real estate companies in the Ruston area to source housing units that meet specific criteria: safe neighborhoods, adequate space, reliable infrastructure, and affordable rates negotiated through the partnership.
When a student enrolls in EMPOWER LIFE, the housing coordinator reviews their specific situation โ enrollment campus, commute distance, schedule, any specific accessibility or accommodation needs โ and matches them to an available unit.
The process is managed entirely by the EMPOWER LIFE team. Students are not left to navigate Craigslist or compete in a housing market that was not designed for them.
Transportation โ The Detail That Changes Everything
Housing without reliable transportation to campus is not a solution. This is why EMPOWER LIFE includes daily campus transportation as a non-negotiable part of the package.
Transportation is provided as a coordinated service from the off-campus housing locations to university campuses in the area. Schedules are built around class timetables. Students do not need to own a car, maintain a vehicle, or depend on unreliable public transit.
This single element โ daily, reliable, coordinated transportation โ is frequently cited by EMPOWER LIFE participants as the detail that made the difference between staying enrolled and dropping out.
Peer Compatibility Matching
Shared housing is difficult when roommates are incompatible. Incompatible roommates create conflict. Conflict creates instability. Instability disrupts academic performance.
EMPOWER LIFE addresses this with a structured peer compatibility matching process conducted before move-in. Students complete a compatibility profile covering schedule patterns, study habits, lifestyle preferences, and social boundaries. The EMPOWER LIFE team uses these profiles to make roommate matches that are likely to be productive rather than conflicted.
This is not a guarantee of a perfect roommate relationship. It is a meaningful reduction in the probability of a destructive one โ and a signal to every participant that their comfort and stability matter.
Healthcare and Food Support
Food insecurity and untreated health issues are two of the most common reasons students underperform academically. EMPOWER LIFE addresses both directly.
Every enrolled student receives food supplies at move-in and ongoing access to food support through the campus network. Healthcare referrals are made through Champions World International's established partner network โ connecting students to primary care, mental health services, and specialist referrals without requiring them to navigate an unfamiliar system alone.
